Swabbing stewards urgently needed – interested in helping out?

TEERA members and others involved in endurance horse riding will be aware that, in order to ensure our sport remains ‘clean’, horses are regularly swabbed for drugs, both legal and illegal, at endurance events.

The swabbing procedure must be supervised by an accredited swab steward of which there are only a very few in Tasmania. There is an urgent need to train more, both in Tasmania and elsewhere in this country.

To that end, Equestrian Australia is seeking expressions of interest from interested parties to undertake the relevant training to become accredited. This involves a two-day course followed by attendance at three events acting as a probationary swab steward.

If you believe you may be able to assist, please contact the TEERA secretary Mark Dunn – secretary@teera.asn.au – by 10 November 2021.

Tom Quilty Gold Cup 2025 - steering committee members sought

Tassie’s next turn to host a Tom Quilty Gold Cup event is in 2025.

Quiltys are years in the planning and the TEERA SMC is keen to establish a steering committee for the event as soon as possible, preferably by the end of 2021.

The SMC is pleased to have already received a number of expressions of interest however, there remains a need for more people to join the group.

If you or anyone in your endurance network is interested in joining the steering committee, please contact the TEERA secretary, Mark Dunn --> secretary@teera.asn.au

Vale Claude Filleul

TEERA was deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Tasmanian endurance legend Claude Filleul last week. TEERA expresses its sincere condolences to Edna and family.

Andrew Miles

TEERA President

-----

Claude was founding member of TEERA. In 1975 a group, which included Claude, Don Fraser, Doug Lockhart, Max Denney and Pat Hodgetts (there may have been others), held a meeting at Deloraine and established a committee. The first ride was held at Sprent in conjunction with the school fair. Claude and Edna also hosted rides at their farm at Ridgley and Claude served on the management committees of both TEERA and AERA.

Claude’s riding career began when he was around 23. Gordan Williams and George Gaffney taught Claude to ride and his first horse, Joe, came from Gordan Williams. He trail rode extensively and was a member of the North West Hunt Club. Claude’s life revolved around horses and later, endurance.

He particularly loved 100 milers, and the challenges posed by rides such as the 100 miler that went up through Lake McKenzie. He achieved his first Quilty buckle in 1988, in Queensland, and played a key part in track marking for the 1993 Sheffield Quilty.

Other highlights in Claude’s riding career include success in two of the three Shahzada’s he attempted and his 1989 successful completion at the Tevis Cup in the United States. Amongst the horses he rode, Moonshine and Worrandi Marissa were a couple of his favourites. All the while, Claude was supported by strapper and cook, Edna.

He will be greatly missed by those who knew him.

End of year awards survey results

TEERA members may recall a survey conducted by the SMC earlier this year in which TEERA members were asked about their preferences for end of year horse / rider awards.

The results have now been considered by the SMC and decisions made. The survey results and a relevant extract from the minutes of a recent SMC meeting are available here.

Important notice re this weekend's Jolly Lette ride

Just a reminder to those coming along that attendance at the ride briefing is MANDATORY for ALL riders in the 5k and 20k rides (per event nomination form) and MANDATORY for NOVICE riders in the 40k and 80k rides (per Rule 26.8).

Any rider noted above who fails to attend the briefing risks elimination pre-ride.

26.8 Attendance at the pre-ride briefing is recommended for all riders and is mandatory for novice riders. Non-attendance at the pre-ride briefing is not an excuse for failure to comply with a specific ride requirement communicated at the pre-ride briefing.

TEERA needs more chief stewards

At present there are five active endurance chief stewards in Tasmania. Of these, four are still actively competing, none are getting any younger and at least one has indicated a desire to wind back.

TEERA is seeking expressions of interest from the Tasmanian endurance community to add to the chief steward pool.

To be a chief steward you need to be 18 years of age and to be a fully accredited TPR steward. You also need the ability to think on your feet and to be able to deal with the occasional 'pressure' situation that arises at rides.

Most chief stewards will tell you that they enjoy the role almost as much as actually competing in an event. Getting to the end of an event with everyone safe, well and happy brings a sense of satistaction of a job well done. Acting as a chief steward provides an opportunity to give back to the sport that has given you much pleasure over the years.

If you think you might be able to assist, please contact either Mark Dunn or Andrew Miles. Either of these two is also available to discuss in more detail what the role involves.

Novice riders must attend the ride briefing

At a recent ride, two riders in a 40k ride went off course and, for a while, their whereabouts was not known to ride organisers or the chief steward. The riders in question, one of whom was a novice rider, did not attend the ride briefing.

Rule 29 makes it clear that novice riders must attend the ride briefing or 'they may be eliminated by the chief steward before the start of the ride'. Some leniency has been shown to novice riders in the past regarding this Rule however this is unlikely to be the case in future.

A key reason for this (apart from the obvious safety issues) is that, in the event of an injury to a novice rider who had not attended the ride briefing, the relevant ride insurance may not apply.

Please, novice riders (all riders riders who have not progressed to 'endurance' status), make sure you attend the ride briefing.
